LOOK INTO THE ART AND CULTURE OF EMPORDÀ THROUGH ITS CHARACTERS

Food and Wine Routes

BEYOND WINE
By Redacció Photo Javier Almar

The Empordà is a landscape that has been built through time. There's no greater pleasure than diving into the passing of the seasons in every piece of land, passing cloud, and gentle wave. The Mas Geli winery in the Masos de Pals is a privileged spot surrounded by the mountains of Begur and Montgrí. Lluís, part of this family project, guides us on a walk through the vineyards while telling us about the gravelly land, the salinity of the sea breeze, and the underground aquifer. He speaks of what the wine will become: a living object bathed in its environment, the essence of the land.

The walk ends at the winery, where the expert chef in botanical cuisine, Iolanda Bustos, awaits us. A proud resident of the Empordà, she defines herself as a wild gatherer, and her dishes are based on what she harvests from the surrounding area. Her biodynamic cuisine presents magical naturalism that isn't seen, but felt. The author of several books on culinary wisdom, her objective as a chef is to connect people with nature. Between dishes, she tells us about one of her new projects to offer a food and wine route through the rice fields and vineyards in Pals.

Sandra Bisbe, the official guide of the Baix Ter Montgrí park, explains the history of rice cultivation in Pals while accompanying visitors on an hour-long walk. We eventually reach the Mas Geli vineyards. Anna Pérez, the sommelier and owner, greets us and describes her wines and offers a tasting that is a fixture every Tuesday evening for both locals and visitors to the Emporda.

This is one of the many unique DO Empordà Wine Route experiences that unites 32 wineries throughout the Empordà. These wine tourism experiences include visits to wineries, meals set in vineyards, guided walks among beautiful landscapes, visits to food and wine museums, and numerous activities all with the aim of discovering and enjoying the landscape from up close, a way to genuinely immerse yourself in a tradition deeply rooted in this land. //
